Right out of High School with a brand new Drivers License I took my first job driving Taxi in Manhattan fifty years ago. That was like going to driving University, I quickly mastered Jackass Driving, Jackass Driving is throwing caution in the wind, breaking all the rules, putting yourself and others at risk. Weaving, cutting people off, no signal and always driving too fast. Those are all tools for a Taxi Driver, not good driving habits for a contentious Motorist. My next job driving was driving as an independent Courier, where speedy deliveries made me one thousand dollars weekly. Needless to say I scrambled the traffic in Manhattan and the neighboring Tri State. All in all doing both Jobs with one accident that was not my fault but by some other Jackass Driver who cut me off on an ice slick road and then took his foot off the gas. I then moved on to being a tactical Motorist.
Tactical motoring saves Lives, paint, insurance cost and your Driving privileges. Make no mistake having a Drivers License is a privilege awarded by the State issued to you. By abusing it driving like a jackass you loose it, and your privilege not your right to drive. Tactical motoring is a practiced style of driving, which focuses on safety, good judgement, and following the rules of the Road.
Roadside Graves you see them everywhere Memorials erected ,with flowers and words for a lost one. Avoidable destruction of Lives , Bodies and families, some young some beautiful, some intelligent Scholars, some rising Stars. Many could have been avoided, if someone practiced Tactical Driving. You start with a well maintained vehicle, good Brakes ,Tires and suspension saves Lives, in an accident situation along with your good Driving skills. Putting on your thinking cap the minute you turn the key is of most importance.
Tactical driving is a practiced way of driving, not driving in packs like a heard of Sheep, not driving at the same rate of speed side by side. Always space yourself properly developing a sensible traffic flow. Not driving tactically in a mishap the consequence could be tragic. I once came upon a traffic jam cussed by an accident involving over a hundred vehicles, all travelling on two inches of snow like it was a sunny summer’s day. The Highway was littered with mangled metal. The Greyhound has never caught the Rabbit. When I am driving cross country, I always chase the Rabbit and never wanting to catch the car exceeding the speed limit in double digits. He is the one that is going to get the Tickets, I am only drafting to make time.
Showoff driving and Jackass driving is one and the same, one Driver is in a hurry and is on a mission, maybe he is late for work the third time this week. He could just be on his way to loose his License, maybe he is just another Jackass. Being another Jackass, you pick up the chase, you are bent on showing him that you are just as good as he is and you’ve got a better running Car. Now you have two Jackass on their way to calamity, now you have become Road Hazard #2. That is not what driving is about, if you are out to make some time, you progressively accelerate to loose the Traffic, not barrel through it. Barreling through Traffic is Jackass driving, and is very dangerous. When you barrel through City Streets you do not give Jay walking Pedestrian any chance, it’s now you see him, now he is Hood Ornament. The woman driving the Benz on Missouri Ave that took out the Jaywalker pushing the Stroller with her five year old in hand found that out too late. She killed the Infant and critically injured the other two. It all happened so fast, that’s how it is when you Barrel through a forty five miles per hour zone. driving in a safe contentious manner at forty five mph you stop on a Dime.
